Camping with small children

Posted by on Aug 5, 2014 in Blog | Comments Off on Camping with small children

In the current days of video games, iPads and internet, many kids do not get the experience of camping in the outdoors without these coveted luxuries. Plan your family camping vacation in the Sandhills and leave technology behind. Get back to basics and consider camping in a tent or even renting a camper or RV. The Sandhills of Nebraska offer spectacular views and lots of activities for all ages. Here are some tips on planning your vacation with kids to get the most out of your experience.

• Plan the camping trip together – let the kids be involved and make decisions. This will keep them excited and build anticipation for the trip.
o Decide on places to go – consider interests, outdoor experience and children’s ages. Do a bit of research and make a list with photos for the kids to rank by ‘must do’ and ‘if we have time.’
o Choose activities such as swimming, horseback riding and hiking.
o Plan and shop for your meals. This will save you time and money.
o Prepare and pack the equipment and supplies.
• Try a backyard campout before you go for the first time. This will help prepare the kids for what to expect.
o Teach the kids how to set up a tent.
o Try some outdoor cooking – there are many recipes that you can make over a campfire other than hotdogs and marshmallows!
o Experience a night outdoors in sleeping bags.
o Plan a few activities such as storytelling or board games.
o Search the sky for constellations and shooting stars.
o Listen to the many night sounds and try to identify them.
• Try to experience outdoor activities with your kids
o Teach them about safety and to respect nature.
o Teach outdoor skills and outdoor ethics. Things such as ‘take out what you take in’ are simple, yet important, concepts.
o Make camp chores fun. Collect firewood, hammer tent stakes, help set up chairs – kids will enjoy feeling helpful.
o Take a small day hike in the woods at a local park. Take time to point out different flowers, leaves and wildlife along the way.
o Visit a nature center or observatory.
o Read books about camping and the outdoors.
o Go on a flashlight walk after dark.

Once you have had some camping ‘practice,’ when the time comes to take your trip, do not underestimate what you will need. Be sure to bring extra clothing and shoes – the kids will get wet and extremely dirty. Also pack some warm clothing – air off of the river can be chilly, especially after the sun goes down. Dressing in layers is the best option, as the daytime temperatures can be quite warm.

Also remember to bring bug spray and sunscreen. Most of the day you will probably be outdoors and will want protection from the hot sun and pesky bugs. It is also a good idea to bring a swimsuit. Even if you are not planning on swimming, if you happen upon a creek or stream, it will save you a wet outfit. Also pack a small first aid kit for any accidents, bumps and bruises. Rain gear should be included, as well as activities for indoors in case of uncooperative weather.

When going camping with small children for the first time, take your time getting there. Make lots of stops on the way there and on the way home. Do not plan on staying more than two or three nights, and be sure to bring comforts from home such as special toys, blankets and pillows. Bring lots of snacks and plenty of drinks to stay hydrated.

Most of all, enjoy the time and make memories that will last your children a lifetime. Take plenty of photos, and even consider letting the kids use a disposable camera that they can snap whatever they would like during the trip. These can be incorporated into a scrapbook or photo album that everyone will enjoy for years to come.

Money saving tips for your Nebraska road trip

Posted by on Jun 2, 2014 in Blog | Comments Off on Money saving tips for your Nebraska road trip

It seems as though no matter the time of the year that the price of fuel at the gas pump keeps going up. In 2013 the price of gasoline was over $4.00 per gallon in some areas. Going on a Nebraska road trip does not have to break the bank at the pump. By following a few gas saving tips at home and on the road, you will have enough funds left to enjoy on your Nebraska vacation at the Sandhills Motel.

Get a Tune Up

An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure, after all. A properly tuned engine uses less gas. It is also worth it to avoid car problems while on your Nebraska vacation that could have been easily headed off by a trip to the mechanic beforehand.

Buy Gas Early or Late in the Day

During the warm months, the outside temperature affects the way gasoline behaves at the pump. During the cooler parts of the day, gas is more dense. As temperatures rise, gas density falls and you get less of it when you fill your tank. It is also a good idea to fill up early in the week. Generally, gas prices fluctuate Wednesday through Saturday, and although they may go down, chances are better that they will go up, should there be an increase in demand.

Reduce Wind Resistance

Remove any unneeded ski or luggage racks from your car. If they are not being used for your Nebraska road trip, the only purpose they are serving is adding wind resistance to your vehicle. Also, keep windows closed when possible, as open windows also contribute to reducing the aerodynamics of your car.

Check Your Tire Pressure

Temperature fluctuations can wreak havoc on your tire pressure. Properly inflated tires reduce road friction, thus giving you better gas mileage. Under inflation also causes tires to wear faster, putting you at the tire shop before maximizing the life of your current tires.

Fill Your Tank Near State Lines

This involves a bit of research ahead of time, but due to fluctuating tax rates gas prices can vary significantly from state to state. If you discover you are driving through a state with a low tax rate, you could save a bundle by filling in that state when you enter it, and again before you leave it.

Turn the Engine Off

If you are waiting at a rest stop or waiting for other members of your group to get ready to go, there is no need to let the engine idle. This not only uses extra gas, but releases pollutants into the air.

Change Your Filters

Dust and grime build on filters that help your engine run efficiently. When they are dirty, your vehicle works harder to push through air and liquid and therefore uses more gasoline.

Drive Steadily and Slowly

By driving at or under the speed limit and maintaining consistent speed, your car will use gas more efficiently. If you accelerate quickly and use brakes heavily you are not only causing extra strain on your brake pads, but increasing the drag that causes your car to use more gasoline.

By following these fuel saving tips you don’t have to wait for gas prices to go down before heading out on your Nebraska road trip to the Sandhills Motel. Keeping ahead of the game with a little planning will keep your tank full and your wallet happy.

Camp in comfort by keeping the bugs away

Posted by on Apr 30, 2014 in Blog | Comments Off on Camp in comfort by keeping the bugs away

Camping should be a lot of fun and, although you can take measures to minimize the risk of encountering flies, wasps, mosquitoes, ants and other creepy crawlies, it would be silly to think that you can spend your time in the great outdoors without ever coming into contact with any of these creatures – it is, after all, their home that you are visiting. You are the guest, they are the resident.

However, there are things you can do to keeping the bugs away and make things as enjoyable as possible during your stay in the outdoors. The amount of precautionary measures you take will also depend on the location of your trip. The pests we will focus on today are the flying, stinging, generally annoying insects that seem to be common in the Sandhills of Nebraska.

Insect Repellent

Insect repellent is your first line of defense in the outdoors against insects. It comes in all kinds of varieties and is formulated to deter wasps, flies and mosquitoes from annoying you. Insect repellent can come in an aerosol form, stick application, wet cloths, and non-aerosol sprays. Some people swear by those which contain a chemical called DEET as the best deterrent, although others are offended by its distinctly strong scent. However, there are several on the market that don’t have DEET as an active ingredient that will help to keep the bugs away. There are even those who claim a mixture of essential oils such as lavender, peppermint, tea tree oil and lemongrass will do the trick without the chemicals.

Whichever repellent you choose, many camping trips are ruined by the unwanted attention of flies, wasps, and mosquitoes. For this reason, be sure to have plenty on hand and use it even on the outer layers of your clothing, as many hungry, biting insects will not be deterred from taking a bite through a thin layer of fabric.

Citronella Candles

Citronella candles give off a scent that mosquitoes and other flying insects can’t stand. They come in all shapes and sizes, and in all sorts of containers. You can even get citronella liquid for use in thing such as tiki torches. Not only are they good as an insect repellent, candles and torches can also set the ambiance for camping with their subtle and warming light. Be sure to use caution when you retire for the evening by extinguishing all flames.

Mosquito Coils

Mosquito coils burn much in the same was as incense. One end of the coil is lit and it will emit smoke slowly. The aroma that emits will help to keep the bugs away. One downfall of coils is that if there happens to be a breeze, your deterrent is quickly blown away from your camping area. However, if the weather is calm, these can provide several hours of defense. Once again, you should ensure they are fully extinguished before you head off to sleep.

Whatever precautions you take, it’s always important to consider the location of your campsite, especially when there may be added dangers from additional creatures such as snakes, mice, raccoons, and other animals. However, basic prevention can ensure that your trip to the outdoors is not spoiled by bugs and pests seeking their next meal, while you are enjoying your visit at the Sandhills Motel and Glidden Canoe Rental.

Bird Watching | Sandhills Motel & Glidden Canoe Rental

Posted by on Dec 5, 2013 in Blog | Comments Off on Bird Watching | Sandhills Motel & Glidden Canoe Rental

Bird watching or commonly known as birding is a fun activity that everyone can enjoy. At Sandhills Motel & Glidden Canoe rental, we offer a fun bird watching experience that you won’t want to miss out on while visiting the Nebraska area. Our guides are educated about the birds in the area and are eager to answer any questions that you may have. Identifying a bird’s species for the first time can be difficult, but you will become a pro in no time! After some time you will learn to look for specific things about each bird, such as the color and features the bird may have, all while observing the birds in their native, natural environment.

What will you need to begin your bird watching experience? Binoculars are a must! They are an important necessity to have for your bird watching adventure and they help you spot birds that you may not have seen otherwise. Binoculars will also allow you to zoom in and see the bird’s colors and features better. A comfortable harness or neck strap is a must for your binoculars, this will help keep you comfortable and prevent you from having to carry them the whole time. When looking for a strap for your binoculars; make sure that the strap is comfortable around your neck to refrain from neck pain later. Once you have your binoculars and a strap or harness, you will be ready to begin your bird watching experience.

When bird watching in Nebraska you may spot Sharptail Grouse and Prairie Chicken, which are the most popular bird species found in Nebraska. They are well known in the area because of their ‘grassland dance.’ The grassland dance is a ritual performed by Sharptail Grouse and Prairie Chickens. The dance is held on special grounds known as a ‘lek.’ The male birds gather on the lek trying to claim their territory. They dance around trying to intimidate their rivals and attract hens. The grouse are known for making deep booming noises and the Sharptail species are known for their frenetic performances. At Sandhills Motel & Glidden Canoe Rental, we have been presenting the ‘grassland dance,’ since 2001 and it is a must see Nebraska attraction. Don’t miss your chance to see the Nebraska ‘grassland dance,’ while you are visiting.

When scheduling your bird watching experience allow enough time for the viewing. Viewings are usually three to four hours long and up to 16 people are allowed to view the birds at a time. We provide transportation to the viewings for your convenience. Viewings start early, as it’s necessary to arrive at the lek before dawn so as not to interrupt the birds. We have blinds that are placed 50 feet from bird activity and are arranged according to the angle of the sun, this is to help you have the best possible viewing and photo opportunities.

Be sure to plan ahead to secure your room too! Call today to reserve your spot for a viewing of the Grassland Dance, a truly unique bird watching experience that you will not forget. Viewings fill up quick, but short notice bookings can be made based on availability. At Sandhills Motel we offer comfortable accommodations in the beautiful Nebraska Sandhills area, which is one of Nebraska’s most popular tourist destinations.  Visit our website at: www.sandhillsmotel.com or call us at (308) 546-2206 for more information.
